Creating my artists identity

Artist name- !The Big Hurt!. This band currently belongs to the record label "Stay Humble Music".
Age- The age range would be around 20-30,because from the image at the top you can clearly see that there not teenagers.
Gender- Male
Location- The location for the band is in Kent Island which is located in Maryland, America.
Ethnicity- The ethnicity of the band is white males.
Brief History- In 1988 a few members of the band wanted to combine different genres of music such as Reggae, Funk, Acid Jazz, Ska and Punk and Drum-n-Bass. They also then recruited to new members to the band after sending out musician wanted ads and these two new members bought new features into the band and also brought in more experience to the band as well. The band has also released an album called "lessons" which includes quite a lot of different genres of music such as reggae, alternative rock, jazz etc.
Clothing

I have decided to choose the pieces of clothing because I think the band doesn't really focus on there physical appearance as much as they focus on their music, as from there profile picture you can clearly see that the band members are dressed quite casual for males their age. But, I could see a few band members wearing t-shirts that have the bands logo on them (if there is one), but other than that I think they would be wearing quite casual clothing. Even though there music is quite funky and new, I think they would keep a simple style of clothing because they rather have there music be heard than what there appearance is.

dark lighting |

When it comes to mise-en-scene I think quite a few things can be put in to their music video. As in the song it can be taking in an interpretive way for example in the lyrics it says "And remote control at the pawn store" and the visuals could show the actor walking into the pawn store, plus the money image also relates to the pawn store. When it comes to lighting I think it can be based around both light and dark, as maybe if the music video focuses on a relationship the bright light can connote the happiness of the relationship while the dark light can connote the destruction and sadness of the relationship. Also, the reason why I included an image of a teddy bear is because it could connote some sort of happiness between the couple, as a sort of special possession. When it comes to settings there could be quite a variety, as the image of the garage could be the band playing. The image of the town being a sort of extra shots and a home where the couple could live etc.
colours
The reason why I have decided to choose these colours is because I think that the band members themselves come across as ordinary but there music is where all the colours and imagination comes from. Also when listening to their song it comes across as being lively and energetic and I think that bright colours are able to put across the effect of being energetic.
Imagery
Imagery

When listening to their song quite a few different images come into mind and they are quite different from one another. The main thing that comes to mind is how a relationship starts of all nice and sweet and then it turns out to be horrible, which results in the couple arguing, which three of the images I have chosen shows. The song also evokes a lot of smashing of objects and destruction, mainly because when the songs tempo picks up, the tone of it is fast and aggressive, and I just imagine the couple throwing plates at each other. But, also when the tempo pick up it could have shots between the band and the couple. The reason why I used the images of a man tied up and the woman in green is because also what comes to my mind is that their is this crazy and unstable woman that is keep her boyfriend hostage and treats him like a doll. The image of the cigarette is something that comes up in the chorus of the song, and the repeat of it just sticks in my mind.
Photo of person I would like to play my actress

In my music video, I would consider Rianne for playing the female in the video as I think she would come across as the ideal girlfriend role and also I could imagine her being able to play the crazy woman role as well, as she isn't camera shy and has an energetic personality to her.

Song analysis
Analysing lyrics: The Big Hurt!- Low down ho
You would always be the one
to try and keep a brother happy.
Lately maybe I’ve been feeling kind of crappy.
Low down ho.
to try and keep a brother happy.
Lately maybe I’ve been feeling kind of crappy.
Low down ho.
The first verse of the song seems to be about a person who is either related or that they have a good relationship with another person. But recently the relationship between them has gone from good to bad. The word “brother” in the verse makes the audience come to the conclusion of there being some sort of relationship. Also the use of emotions in the lyrics also help the audience define the sort of emotions that people feel every day, relating to them more.
Yes I admit this shit just makes me sick.
If I come quick she’s out the door.
Man I don’t know.
The second verse of the lyrics seems to be about the person becoming more and more emotional. The line “shit just makes me sick” portrays the emotions of anger, pain and sadness. The second line of the second verse seems to be about a couple that are going through some rough patches in their relationship as the lyrics come across as saying that the women can’t stand being in the same room as the man.
So why’d you have to be that way?
Hotter than a cigarette and everybody’s smoking.
Hotter than a cigarette and everybody’s smoking.
The chorus of the song sounds like its aiming it towards a certain person or audience as they use the word “you “making them feel like the artist is directly talking to them. Also the lyrics could also be about a past relationship that the artist has had and he is taking inspiration from it because the first line “so why’d you have to be that way?” sounds like the artist has had a personal experience.
She leaves me once again I don’t
Know why she had to go.
She’s got my CD’s, VCR, TV
And remote control at the pawn store.
Know why she had to go.
She’s got my CD’s, VCR, TV
And remote control at the pawn store.
The third verse of the song clarifies that the lyrics are connoting a relationship that has gone good from bad as the women’s actions are being described and the man not being able to understand why she is doing all of this. Also in this verse the lyrics show signs of sadness and aggression as the female takes the mans possessions away and tries to make money of them, and usually when someone is angry at someone else they try and make the person feel how they are feeling by taking away something precious to them.
So why’d you have to be that way?
Hotter than a cigarette and everybody’s smoking.
The second line of the chorus could be connoting that this person has done something bad such as adultery or so. The person gender seems to be female as the verb hotter is usually described for females rather than males, but also the word “Hotter” could connote the emotions that the person was feeling, and hot would be associated with anger and pain. Also in the lyrics the female is being described as attractive and the word “everybody” makes it seem like everyone is interacting with this female in a bad way. The reason why I think she is being used in a bad way is because of the imagery of her begin a cigarette and after people use a cigarette they throw it away and move on to the next one, connoting that this women is being used for her attractive appearance.
So get to stepping woman you’ve got me feeling low.
She’s trifling and scandalous I’ll miss the loving but she’s stepping on my toes.
She’s trifling and scandalous I’ll miss the loving but she’s stepping on my toes.
The fourth verse seems to be the man telling the woman to get her act together as he is beginning to become upset and the word ‘low’ could connote that all the fighting is making the male go into some sort of depression state. The words used to describe the woman make her seem like she’s someone that you shouldn’t mess with, as she will treat you like rubbish, and the man admits that he loves her but at the end of the day she is also causing him a lot of pain and sadness. Also ‘stepping on my toes’ could connote that this woman is also very controlling and likes things to done her way and nobody else’s.
Low down ho.
Why’d you have to be that way?
Why’d you have to be that way now?
These lyrics here seem to be in the past tense and the future, as the first line is describing what the female was like beforehand and the way that it is said comes across has quite an disappointing and annoyed tone to it and that tone carries on through to the second line but with feeling of being fed up with this person and questioning why she actually has to be the way she is.
Low down ho.
Low down ho.
The actual name of the song is repeated through the song ‘low down ho’ and the only thing that I think that this could mean is how a man is feeling the lowest he has ever felt in his life.
Target Audience
Age: The target audience age for this song seems to be around ages of 16-onwards as the lyrics to the song can relate to a number of peoples relationships
Gender: The gender of this song seems to be both male and female, as both genders are able to relate to it, but it could be more towards a male audience as the band are a group of males so they could of put there own personal experiences into the lyrics and saying how males are in relationships and what they feel.
Interest: A mixture of music genres e.g. reggae, rock, punk. Relationships, life in general.
Location: The location of the target audience could be worldwide
Ethnicity: There doesn’t seem to be a specific ethnicity that the song is aimed towards, but I say that it is more aimed to white people as they are more likely to listen to this sort of punk/ Indie music.
Analysing lyrics
The lyrics to the song are telling the audience about how relationships can go from good to bad and what I find different about this is that usually a woman is singing about relationships etc. but this time around a man is singing about it “so get to stepping woman you’ve got me feeling low”, so instead of getting a female point of view which you usually do you get the males. The lyrics and the song contradict one another as hearing the beat and tempo makes you feel all happy, but if you actually listen to the lyrics it’s about a relationship gone badly wrong. I think the artist has done it this way to show that we as humans hide our true feelings by acting all happy and that nothings wrong but inside we all secretly feel lonely and sad. The acting happy side would be considered as the beat and tempo while the lyrics are considered as what really truly feel. From the lyrics the video could be showing how the relationship started and how it ended as from the last verse “why did you have to be this way? Why did you have to be that way now?” we discover that all this man wanted was for his partner to behave in the right way and not to cause such pain and grief towards him.
Analysing music
The artist music and lyrics also reminds me of a more popular band “Two door cinema club” as when listening to this song it reminds me of some of their videos, which are having a similar beat and lyrics to this song, while their video just being something unrelated to the lyrics. The music for this song is very fast paced and it brings out the feeling of happiness and joy and it is also quite catchy. When it comes to creating the music video, I would have to consider the pace of the music so that it matches the visuals.
Analysing tempo
The tempo of the song is quite fast during the majority of the song and when it comes to the chorus “So why’d you have to be that way? Hotter than a cigarette and everybody’s smoking”. The tempo really starts to become faster, becoming more engaging and also the audience begins to feel the music. In the fourth verse this part in the song is when the tempo begins to become slow and the vocalist also begins to have a sad tone to his voice, showing that this song is meaningful to him. But, when it comes to ‘she’s stepping on my toes’ there is more emphasise on the words as from the sounds of it there are about three men saying it and then the tempo begins to pick up its original tempo.
I decided to choose this song as when listening to this song quite a ways came into my head in which I can communicate the song in a video. This songs comes across has having quite a few different meanings and to me I can see the song having a contradicting music video. Also I think the tempo and beat of the song contradict the lyrics, as the beat sounds all happy and jolly, but when you turn to the lyrics its about a relationship coming to an end, at what comes to my head when thinking this is a woman keeping a man captive and then it would lead on from there, as in having him tied to a chair or trying to escape and always getting caught by her etc. I quite like this idea as I think it would be fun to create and also it contradict the lyrics a lot and it would give a comical feeling to it, plus as the music is quite fast and happy, it would go against what is being shown in the video as in having the man tied up on a chair or so.Another video idea that comes to mind is a narrative music video, as through the lyrics we can see that there is a story behind it and in the video it can show a good happy relationship but as time goes on in deteriorates into a bad one, but maybe it could have a slight twist to it being instead of humans acting it out, maybe they wear some sort of mask that resembles an animal or maybe children.
